Long description:

Participants in this course will gain knowledge of and a rationale for utilizing positive classroom management techniques. Perceptual control theory teaches us that all humans have a need to feel some control over their own environment. This class will promote teaching students to become self-managers of their behaviors through classroom participation in procedures, expectations and consequences; problem solving; decision-making and communication methods. In addition, teachers will gain an understanding of various causes of misbehaviors, appropriate techniques for dealing with those behaviors, and the impact that positive classroom management has on academic success.

The course includes effective classroom management strategies for culturally diverse students, students of poverty, and ELL students.

Highlights: Each lesson includes activating prior knowledge, tutorials, and assignments. Participants will use information from the instructor along with suggested readings to build techniques for creating an effective management plan. The course is designed to be interactive between and among the instructor and other participants. Participants will design and implement tools related to classroom management.

Run Time & Credit Availability: Courses run 8 weeks. New offerings begin the first Wednesday of each month. Thirty (30) hours of continuing education units (CEUs) are available.
